Innovation Day 2019: Behind the projects

Big Sign with the letters "International Area" is marking the entrance of the International Area at the Innovation Day 2019. Several groups of people are standing on the grass talking.

Entrance to the “International Area” at Innovation Day 2019

On 9 May, the open-air “Festival of Ideas” in Berlin-Pankow once again demonstrated the inventiveness of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) as well as research institutions and illustrated the effectiveness of the technology-oriented funding schemes of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) annually hosting the innovation fair.

At this year’s Innovation Day for SMEs, more than 300 companies, research institutes and innovation networks presented new developments in medical technology, 3D printing, artificial intelligence and a large number of other future fields on the open-air grounds of the AiF Projekt GmbH. The one-day event that attracted more than 2,000 visitors provided a great opportunity to get first-hand information on BMWi’s innovation promotion programmes, to get in contact with companies, SME organisations and research institutes and to talk to representatives from politics in a relaxed atmosphere.

The „International Area“, again hosted by the transnational funding networks CORNET and IraSME, offered visitors an overview about cross-border research projects, guided tours and a diverse programme with many highlights involving several international partners that gave short presentations on their individual funding landscape. This year, a special focus was set on the official guest country Austria.

Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary of the BMWi and Federal Government Commissioner for SMEs, Michael Esterl, Secretary General of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs (BMDW), and AiF president Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Bauer also visited the “International Area”, honouring the innovation potential that international cooperation projects offer SMEs.

A special moment to celebrate was the official signature and handover of the „Memorandum of Understanding“ to Carlos Eduardo Pereira, director of CORNET’s latest network partner EMBRAPII (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa e Inovação Industrial) from Brazil symbolising the new and strong partnership. Dr. Ole Janssen, Deputy Director General Innovation and Technology Policy of the BMWi, and the CORNET representatives Felix Rotter and Viktoria Cvetković handed over the document within the inspiring atmosphere of the „International Area“.

CORNET Success Stories: Exhibitors give insights into the think tanks of innovative Collective Research

Austria’s participation in international cooperation projects within the CORNET and IraSME networks is particulary high. Three successfully running CORNET projects were exhibited at this year’s Innovation Day showing vividly the impact and effectiveness of international Collective Research.

The project crew from "SurfParquet" is presenting their research results on the optimised resistance of wooden floors against building chemicals. As they are posing for the camera in front of their booth, the four project members have some wooden exhibition pieces in their hands.

Dr. Gerhard Grüll (Holzforschung Austria, HFA) from the CORNET project „SurfParquet“, that developed an optimised resistance of wooden floors against building chemicals, stated that “CORNET promotes active cooperation with the industry and at the same time offers a very interesting and active cooperation between research institutes in Germany and Austria.” He further remarked: “In a CORNET-project, you work on practical problems, you are on the ravages of time and you can offer solutions to the industry.”

CORNET “an ideal platform to collaborate across borders with other research organisations and industry partners”

Nina Krempl (Montan-University Leoben, Chair of Injection Moulding of Polymers) from the CORNET project „CARACOAT“, dealing with innovative coatings for molds and tools in the plastic processing industry, perceived the Innovation Day for SMEs as “a great opportunity to get an overview about other successfully funded projects”.  In her point of view, CORNET offers “an ideal platform to collaborate across borders with other research organisations and industry partners.”

All CORNET exhibitors came to the positive conclusion that, for them, the Innovation Day was very successful as they could look back on well attended booths and interesting contacts they have made.
